Let me state up front that I don’t begrudge pitcher Gerrit Cole for getting as much money as he can from the New York Yankees, who I’m sure are doing quite well financially.

The Yankees are paying Cole $36 million a year. Cole is obviously an excellent starting pitcher. Most starting pitchers pitch in about 30 games per year. But let’s say the Yankees want to get as much out of Cole as they can, so he pitches 36 games per year. He will make $1 million each game. A good starting pitcher will throw about 100 pitches per game. If my math is correct, Cole will make $10,000 per pitch. Wouldn’t we all like to be in that position?

I think Gerrit Cole is living the American dream that most of us can only dream about.
