Letter to the editor: God loves us all but hates sin

Some readers will recall the Super Bowl commercial paid for by the He Gets Us organization, where vignettes of foot washing included a scene in front of a family planning clinic. Other commercials by the group espouse a more liberal view of migrants who face persecution and may cross national borders in contravention of immigration law.

Hobby Lobby and the other folks behind the movement are correct: “Jesus Gets Us. All of Us.” My fear is that, in trying to appeal to a broader audience of sinners, the group may inadvertently convey the message that it’s OK to sin.

Jesus loves us. All of us. And “all” means all — gays, lesbians, people who suffer from gender dysphoria, abortion providers and those of us who have impure thoughts are the objects of a love that as humans, we cannot even begin to comprehend. But his love can’t save us.

The Bible teaches that God also hates. He hates sin. In fact, the list of things Jesus hates is quite lengthy. See Proverbs 6:16-19. And he’d just as soon spit out, like a mouthful of foul water, hypocritical, lukewarm Christians.

He gets us. And so we had better repent. See Romans 3:23-24.
