This World Water Week, Aug. 25-30, we can all do something to help conserve water and keep our waterways clean: Go vegan.
The water footprint of vegan foods — the amount of water it takes to produce them — is generally much smaller than that of animal-derived ones. For example, it takes about 85,000 gallons of water to produce a ton of vegetables, but roughly 4 million gallons of water to produce a ton of beef.
If that’s not enough to make you reach for a veggie burger, consider this: Farmed animals produce billions of pounds of manure each day, and much of it winds up in our waterways. According to a Pew Environment Group spokesperson, animal waste can be found “in the waters that we depend on for commerce, recreation and perhaps most importantly drinking.”
While the meat, egg and dairy industries should be held accountable for wasting our resources and mucking up our waterways, we must all share in the responsibility for cleaning up our planet.
