Letter to the editor: Good riddance, Roundup
Pesticides have been used for decades to manage invasive weeds and combat pests in homes, schools, early learning centers and public places. However, there is a growing body of evidence showing that exposure to toxic pesticides can cause both short- and long-term health risks, and children are especially vulnerable.
In 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer released a report concluding that glyphosate, marketed commercially as Roundup, is a “probable human carcinogen.” Since then, this pesticide has been banned or restricted in more than 30 countries worldwide.
On June 24, Bayer agreed to pay more than $10 billion (“Bayer paying up to $10.9B to settle Monsanto weedkiller case,” June 24, TribLIVE) to settle thousands of claims in the United States that Roundup causes cancer. The settlement includes $1.25 billion for potential future claims.
Here in Western Pennsylvania, we can work together to protect our children by eliminating the use of this toxic weedkiller. Please join us to take the pledge to prohibit the use of glyphosate in places where we live, learn, grow and play: healthyschoolspa.org/good-riddance-round-up.
Together, we can say, “Good Riddance, Roundup.”
