Amid the ongoing pandemic where government agencies have given us misinformation about masks and the use/misuse of hydroxychloroquine and other easily available drugs, now we find out that the government-run U.S. Postal Service will take longer to deliver mail, due to a supposed overtime crackdown (“Mail could be delayed as new postal head pushes cost-cutting,” July 15, TribLIVE).
Rampant overtime wastes taxpayer dollars. Government-run and subsidized businesses seem to be very careless with your money.
Another example of excess overtime is the MTA in New York City, which is set to get $3.9 billion of your money. Let’s do that the right way: $3,900,000,000. Several employees of the MTA or Long Island Railroad, with base salaries of $60,000, have routinely made over $200,000 because of overtime. No private run company would put up with this abuse, yet it’s a normal occurrence when Uncle Sam is throwing your money at it through subsidies or grants.
The government lacks accountability and it seems that it will never improve, so why would a rational thinking person ever think the government would solve problems?
Businesses subsidized by government seem to be extremely careless about managing their budgets, and until they prove otherwise, we should limit or reduce these subsidies. Subsidies reduce the effectiveness of capitalism and create more problems than they solve.
