Letter to the editor: Government works to improve our quality of life

Tribune-Review

The Trib has published several articles illustrating how our government works for us, including efforts to bring broadband to rural Westmoreland, plugging wells to stop methane leaks, upgrading sewer lines, improving bridges, addressing blight, responding to extreme weather disasters, filling abandoned coal mines and removing lead from water pipes.

Other essential government services include education, health care, safety and security, and parks and recreation. The government protects us through regulations that cover financial, environmental, civil rights, consumer protection and workplace safety. Additionally, the government safeguards us with economic and social support that is critical to our stability. Whether it is Social Security, minimum wage laws, research and development, or support for veterans, children and the disabled, these services are vital for a functioning civil society.

Call it the “deep state” or whatever label you choose. It is our government, our friends, neighbors and our civil servants working to improve our quality of life. Together we achieve what we cannot by ourselves.

Our country has never been perfect, but it continues to be a work in progress. In a democracy, We the People are the government and We the People can change the government. Push back against the plutocrats in today’s Washington. Resist.
