Letter to the editor: Happy memories of Maz and Pirates

I commend you for featuring the famous Bill Mazeroski photo on the 60th anniversary of the Pirates’ fabulous win over the Yankees (“60 years later, 1960 Pirates legends recall ‘amazing’ home run that won World Series,” Oct. 10, TribLIVE).

I grew up in the small Clearfield County town of Curwensville. In 1960, I was a senior on my high school’s football team. We were all Pirates fans and anxiously awaited the outcome of Game 7 in Pittsburgh. As we put on our gear for football practice that Thursday afternoon, I told some pals to stop by my old ’49 Chevy in the parking lot to find out what the score was. We were packed in there when Maz hit his big homer. As you might expect, the car was rocking and we were shouting as we ran to the practice field.

Fifty years later, I was at a craft festival in Florida and came across a framed program from that game at the old Forbes Field. I was delighted to see that it was autographed by Mazeroski himself, in his unique penmanship. I immediately purchased it. I have happy memories of Pirates games I attended there and even enjoyed the frustrating pregame ritual of trying to find a parking place in the surrounding neighborhoods.
