Severe snowstorms and sub-zero temperatures in recent weeks are stark reminders of how vital it is for Pennsylvanians to have access to reliable utility service to stay safe and warm on the most frigid days of the year.
Unfortunately, vulnerable consumers may be at risk of being without heat for various reasons. Factors like cold weather that impact utility bills are often beyond a consumer’s control, but no one should be concerned about heating their homes during the winter.
Finding and applying for energy assistance can be confusing or overwhelming. However, utility providers can help customers manage their bills and improve their homes’ energy efficiency.
The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) has helped millions of low-income Pennsylvania households for more than 40 years with one-time grants to pay winter heating bills. LIHEAP offers both cash and crisis grants. Cash grants range from $200 to $1,000, based on household size, income and fuel type. Crisis grants, ranging from $25 to $1,000, help eligible households facing emergencies and at risk of losing heat.
Individuals can apply at www. compass.state.pa.us or by calling the statewide LIHEAP hotline at 866-857-7095. LIHEAP runs through April 10.
