In response to the letter “Leaders must act on property tax relief” (April 2, TribLIVE): Hempfield residents will be happy to hear that at our last public township meeting, I requested our solicitor to prepare the appropriate legislation to abate (eliminate) the property tax late payment penalty of 10% until the end of the year. The Hempfield supervisors will consider this action at the April 27 public meeting.

Currently, property owners can pay their taxes at a 2% discount until April 30 and at face value until June 30, with the 10% penalty beginning July 1.

We are all in this together, and we all need to do our part to overcome the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic.
