Letter to the editor: Highlands boys' dedication pays off
The effect the Highlands boys basketball journey has had on the school district and community is profound. Of course, the highlight was winning the WPIAL Class 4A title at the Petersen Events Center on Feb. 29. The community celebration that followed allowed everyone an opportunity to see the culmination of our team’s dedication and hard work when the trophy was displayed and the nets were cut down.
These young men served as a symbol for all ages that goal setting and staying focused throughout the journey does pay off. They continually mentioned that none of this would have been possible without community support throughout the season.
At a young age they became a talented group, and many of us cursed them with “potential.” That meant they may do well, but would have to work hard to fulfill that potential. Fortunately, coach Tyler Stoczynski has made hard work the bedrock of the culture he has created in our basketball program.
When they brought home the title, that curse was removed: They did do well!
The lessons learned on this odyssey are too numerous to mention, but seeing their sacrifices pay off will make them successful adults and citizens. What I love about team sports is you become a better person when you learn to put team goals ahead of your own goals.
We have a saying at Highlands: “Rams4Life.” I am excited to see what the future holds for these young men. The journey continues …
