This Veterans Day, I wish to make a personal tribute to the five Busony brothers who all served our country with distinction in World War II and the Korean War.
My dad, Nicholas, participated as a medic at the Battle of Bulge. He went on to help liberate a death camp at Dachau. He also served during the Allied occupation of Germany and was later called back to service during the Korean War, just three months after I was born.
My uncle, T/Sgt. Alexander Busony, stormed Omaha Beach on D-Day. He led his platoon deep inside enemy territory until he received near fatal head wounds. He survived but spent many months recovering in a British hospital.
Uncles John and Joseph served in the Army Air Corps. John helped patch up the bombers while Joseph served on a signal station in the Azores.
Youngest brother Adam fought in the brutal Battle of the Chosin Reservoir during the Korean War.
My dad’s sister, now 98, recently told me that those Busony boys had “seen it all.”
I am a proud son and nephew of the Greatest Generation.
Please honor all the men and women who served our great nation this and every Veterans Day.
