Letter to the editor: Housing plan wrong for Squirrel Hill
David Vatz’s op-ed “Squirrel Hill needs more homes” (Aug. 6, TribLIVE) makes a correct statement in its title, but stops there.
As a resident of the street where the proposed development is, I can state confidently that (1) the road is already dangerous and overtrafficked, (2) there’s minimal infrastructure in place for this large development, including no sidewalks, buses or appropriate utilities, and (3) it will diminish the park space that almost entirely surrounds it.
It’s easy to suggest that opponents are being NIMBY, or hint they are racist. It’s much more difficult to explain how this development will be practical given its unusual location and high cost. Perhaps Vatz, along with his developer backers, should go back to the drawing board.
