To offer an alternative to Matt Pergar’s letter “How about some tax credits for those without student loans?” (Nov. 1, TribLIVE: Why not offer a G.I. Bill to people with student debt who join the military? For every year served on active duty, forgive one year of student debt — but only if they receive an honorable discharge.
Full disclosure: While working full time, I used the G.I. Bill to pay for a master’s degree. My oldest daughter served eight years of active duty as an Army physician to repay her four years of medical school paid for by the Army, and my other daughter used the G.I. Bill while working full time as a nurse on active duty in the Air Force to get a master’s degree.
After all, the military is struggling to meet quotas now, so this proposal would benefit both people with student debt and all military branches.
