On the radio, I heard a report of interviews with potential voters who listed border security/immigration as a major concern. They blamed the Democrats for not dealing with the problems and so felt led to support Republican candidates.

On the other hand, Joseph Sabino Mistick’s column ”Mike Johnson won’t be remembered as one of the greats” (Feb. 17, TribLive) reminded me that it is the Republican speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, who controls bills brought up for a vote. Johnson prevented voting on a bipartisan bill on immigration that “is the most restrictive migrant legislation in decades” even though it contained items he supported in the past. President Biden has said he will sign the immigration bill when it is passed and brought to him.

The same Republican speaker of the House said he refused to bring to a vote a bill on aid to Ukraine because “it failed to include border security measures.” Many of the measures were in the very immigration bill he had recently killed!

So how is not dealing with the ongoing problem of immigration and the border the fault of the Democrats and Biden?
