Letter to the editor: How to 'save our democracy'

Tribune-Review

Democrats and their media allies claim to be on a campaign to “save our democracy” by promoting total resistance to anything Trump, along with organized protests against his efforts to keep his campaign promises, which he was overwhelmingly elected to do.

He promised to create secure immigration policies, reduce crime, cut taxes, make the government efficient and open, eliminate wokeism, make international trade fair and work for world peace.

I believe Democrats hate President Trump because he is an outsider, upsetting their decades-long control over government bureaucracies, and he is doing it mostly unilaterally. They claim he is destroying their democracy, which I define as government “by Democrats for Democrats.”

Republicans believe we need to save U.S. democracy by making our elections secure and safe. The Republican attitude is to allow legal citizens to decide in fair and open elections, no gerrymandering, no funky mail-in ballot confusion, and universal photo ID. Most western democracies already follow these policies.

So, I believe it is time to adopt Arnold Schwarzenegger’s three-pronged plan to save democracy:

• Make Election Day a national holiday;

• Create independent redistricting commissions in each state; and

• Introduce universal voter ID requirements.

Let’s all get behind this idea. Write to your Congressman to help, and truly save our democracy.
