Letter to the editor: Hunting opening day battle a problem that doesn't exist
In response to your editorial “What is the value of tradition in deer hunting?” (March 21, TribLIVE), I’d first say that any rule or law that allows for more time in the woods is a good thing.
Perhaps I’m wrong, but there is no law or rule that states a deer hunter must be in the woods hunting on opening day. For those who love their “tradition” of playing poker, having a fire or working on a camp project, I’d suggest they can still do all of those things, and then go hunting on Monday if that’s their preferred day to start deer hunting. Not everyone gets off school or work on that Monday, so a weekend opener better suits those people. The season is extended by the two additional days of hunting Saturday and Sunday in deer season, not shortened.
For those businesses crying economic foul, I’d suggest that those same hunters are still buying those same supplies, just at a different time or at a different store (somewhere closer to home possibly?).
Leave the opener Saturday. For those looking to change it back to Monday, they’re looking for a problem that doesn’t exist.
