Letter to the editor: In praise of Norwin's curriculum
As a former member of the Norwin School Board, it is very distressing to me to see the education of our students being challenged. An unbiased education of current events gives them the freedom to make informed decisions.
This curriculum at Norwin has been ongoing for years, and it has been updated regularly by our educated and professional administrators, teachers, school board members, universities and the local intermediate unit. These are just a few examples of the expert resources utilized by the district.
In addition, our district developed its own long-range plan with a committee composed of volunteers from our teachers who represented kindergarten through graduating students, including special needs students and gifted students. Students were represented, giving them a voice. Parents from all areas of Norwin were also represented through the PTA, and local businesses and organizations were involved in the development of the plan. These volunteers worked solely to prepare and educate our children to make informed decisions for their future.
The school board then voted to accept the plan based on information and facts. Their decisions were never made in haste or by reckless intimidation. Future changes, additions or amendments recommended by equally represented members need to follow established guidelines and should be a part of this committee process.
Please do not allow a cult mentality or politics to influence or sway what is in the best interest of our children/students at Norwin.
I am very proud of our district and our students. Their accomplishments are evident when reading the In Norwin magazine, where student recognition is highlighted.
