Letter to the editor: IRS must end backlog, get refunds to citizens
For many reasons, tens of millions of taxpayers file their federal income tax returns the old-fashioned way, on paper.
Based on my own research and inquiries to our representatives in Washington, there are literally many millions of these paper returns stored in trailers outside of the IRS processing centers and not yet processed. In most cases, these returns show a refund due to the taxpayer.
If our politicians are truly interested in getting money into the economy during these stressful economic times (and I would guess that many who file paper returns could certainly use the money), they need to take forceful, positive action to get the IRS off of its backside and get the refunds to the good citizens who are owed the money.
Stimulus plans sound nice politically, but if the IRS would do its job we might not need any stimulus money, or certainly much less.
Come on, D.C. politicians — do something useful.
