Letter to the editor: It shouldn't take a law to bring back teaching cursive writing

Tribune-Review

I recently saw an article that stated Pennsylvania lawmakers are considering passing a law to teach cursive in schools again.

Since when does it take a law by government to teach “cursive,” or what we called “writing,” in our schools? And by what law did it stop being taught?

I cannot believe how many elementary, junior high, high school and college students I’ve talked to that say they don’t know cursive. They can’t sign their names or read handwritten letters, and some of them do not know how to tell time on traditional analog clocks!

Although I agree that most new technology is great. I do feel that students should not be dependent on their phones to communicate or tell them the time. Instead they should be taught the fundamental basics that we learned growing up in the ’60s. Cursive should never have been eliminated from our curriculums, nor should it take an act of Congress to reinstate it.
