Letter to the editor: It’s always political

Isn’t it laughable when a politician claims that an action of the other party is “political”? “It’s a political witch hunt!”

It’s all political. It always has been. But right now, the proverbial needle is pointing to party over country and a power grab by the few over democracy. The media makes it worse, fanning the flames without conscience or journalistic integrity in many instances.

I’m not sure how we got to this point, but what is happening is not something new. In the early days of the republic, some newspapers were formed for the sole purpose of character assassination for politcial reasons.

George Washington decried political parties. Well, parties are here to stay, but they are not mentioned in the Constitution and thus have no constitutional rights. They might be here to stay, but they change. What Democrats stood for in the past, Republicans may stand for now.

Sometimes new parties are formed, and I sugest that the time is ripe for an Independent Party, formed by moderate conservatives, who I still believe make up the vast majority in this country. Such a party could possibly shake us out of this hyper-political era and return the radical elements in the Democratic and Republican parties back to the margins where they belong.
