Honesty and truthfulness are bearings on a good moral compass. They are attributes of a good human being.

Before you testify in a court of law in the U.S. you are required to take an oath “to tell the truth … .” It is a crime to submit false statements under oath.
When taking office, U.S. representatives, senators and presidents take an oath to uphold the Constitution. They do not take an oath to tell the truth. It is not illegal for our elected officials to lie to the citizens. They are not bound by law to be honest or ethical.
It is up to each citizen to seek the truth.
