Is it any wonder we have a drug problem in Westmoreland County?
In January 2019, Laplez Cummings led police on a three-mile car chase, tossing 2,600 stamp bags of heroin out and then jumping out of the moving vehicle and fleeing on foot. Police had to ram his unoccupied vehicle to stop it before capturing him.
Prosecutors wanted him to serve 15 months to three years in prison, but Judge Meagan Bilik-DeFazio ordered him to serve merely one year on house arrest and three years of probation, saying he could be a strong example to children he mentors (“Westmoreland judge gives Pittsburgh man jail break in North Huntingdon drug case,” Jan. 24, TribLIVE).
I don’t know about you, but I would not want him to be a mentor to my children or grandchildren. What is he going to teach them? That it is OK to run from police, and if you do get caught with drugs, don’t worry because the judge will let you off easy?
