Letter to the editor: Keeping pets safe in hot weather
In hot weather, keeping pets safe becomes a top priority. Here are some tips to ensure your companions stay cool and comfortable:
• Hydration is key: Provide ample fresh, cool water at all times. Replenish bowls frequently, and remember to bring water with you on walks. Consider adding ice cubes to extend coolness.
• Shade matters: Ensure access to shady areas outdoors, like trees or secured tarps. Doghouses trap heat, so provide a cool alternative.
• Limited exercise: Schedule walks during cooler mornings or evenings. Avoid hot pavement that can burn paws. Since you can’t directly measure the sidewalk temperature, the best way to check if it’s safe for your dog’s paws is a simple touch test. Place your bare hand on the sidewalk for at least 10 seconds. If it’s too hot for you to comfortably hold your hand there, it’s definitely too hot for your dog’s paws. This applies to other surfaces like asphalt, concrete, metal or even sand that can get scorching in the summer sun.
• Beat the heat indoors: Bring pets inside during peak heat hours. Consider air conditioning, fans or cooling mats.
Remember, state law prohibits leaving pets unattended outdoors for more than 30 minutes when the temperatures exceed 90 degrees or fall below 32 degrees. It is illegal to leave a tethered dog outside in these temperatures.
By following these tips and adhering to local ordinances, we can ensure our pets enjoy a safe and happy summer alongside us.
