Letter to the editor: Kim Ward's protest warning a disservice

Tribune-Review

An open letter to state Sen. Kim Ward:

I witnessed the absolute best of my community on May 31 at the Westmoreland County Courthouse. People came together from all over the county to mourn George Floyd and stand in solidarity against police brutality. The event, organized by a local mom, showed what we can do when we come together in peace. We are all better for this event, and I am proud to be from Westmoreland County at times like this.

On your Facebook page, you encouraged your constituents to “stay out of downtown Greensburg,” suggesting that there would be problems. Nothing could have been further from the truth. Your inflammatory and divisive language were unfounded, irresponsible and a massive disservice to people in your district.

Our state is home to 36 hate groups. I would add the Pennsylvania Lightfoot Militia from Latrobe to that list. These are the organizations that we all should be concerned with, not peaceful protesters.

Neighbors stood side by side to call for peace and change on May 31. By ignoring your advice, we came together to support each other and demand justice for all. A more diverse and tolerant county is a better county.
