Letter to the editor: Kirk's assassination a bellwether event
We live in confusing times, with Charlie Kirk’s political assassination serving as a bellwether event. Is there truth? Is there absolute truth? Where does truth emanate from? Is the United States a Judeo-Christian enterprise guided by natural law?
If you enter a debate, one deconstructs your opponent’s argument, exposing the error of the argument. This was the genius of Charlie Kirk! When frustrated opponents could not provide a salient counter argument, they resorted to ad hominem attacks. And when ad hominem attacks fail, to silence the opponent. Kirk’s opponent did just that, silencing him, permanently.
Clearly, if you are a constitutional conservative or a God-fearing believer or one who believes in absolute truth and natural law, you need not enter into discourse in the public square. How does one dialogue with a well-organized marching mob carrying preprinted signs? How do you answer someone using diatribes with politically laced words such as fascist, Nazi, Hitler or oligarch?
Indeed, Kirk’s political assassination is a bellwether event where ad hominem attacks and mob rule become normative, replacing civil discourse and engagement and elevating political assassination to a noble deed for the good of society. Indeed, we live in confusing times.
