Letter to the editor: Labeling all Democrats as 'evil' is wrong, divisive

Tribune-Review

A recent letter attacking the Democratic Party was false, dangerous and self-serving (“Democrats have become party of evil,” Sept. 20, TribLive). Claiming Democrats “hate America” or reject “God-given freedoms” is simply untrue. Millions of Democrats are veterans, first responders, union members, small-business owners, parents and church-going Americans who love this country and work every day to strengthen it.

The claim that Democrats support violence against those who “speak the truth” is reckless and baseless. Democrats defend the Constitution, including free speech, and have fought to expand civil rights, protect voting access, defend workers and ensure personal health care decisions remain private and free from political interference.

Blaming Democrats alone for the struggles of America’s cities ignores reality. Crime, poverty and inequality exist everywhere, in red and blue communities alike. Finger-pointing may serve partisan purposes, but it does nothing to solve problems.

Finally, labeling tens of millions of Americans as “evil” is divisive and unhelpful. Democracy thrives on disagreement, but that disagreement must be grounded in facts and respect. Our nation is strongest when we reject falsehoods, stand for truth and work together to tackle the real challenges facing our communities.

Do better.
