Reading the letter “Serving the poor, suffering and strangers” (Aug. 9, Triblive), I conclude that only Democrat Catholics — in that order — will gain admittance to the kingdom to come.
The article “More than $100K raised to help 16 snared in ICE raids at Emiliano’s” (Aug. 8, TribLive) raises some legal questions for the restaurant owner(s):
• Were those detained properly vetted when hired?
• Did the detained have “green cards”? If so, did they acquire Social Security numbers or tax ID numbers with the IRS?
• Did the owners pay a “living” or at least the lawful minimum wage to the detained employees?
• Were Social Security and Medicare payroll taxes deducted, matched and remitted in a timely manner to the IRS?
• Were W-2 statements issued by the employer at years’ end?
• Did the detained workers file tax returns (federal, state, local) last year?
The letter-writer may recognize the admonition “… render therefore unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and unto God the things that are God’s.” (Matthew 22:21, Mark 12:17 and Luke 20:25).
This is just the beginning of this story.
