Letter to the editor: Let coronavirus run its course

Tribune-Review

Since March, our society has been subjected to forced closures and restrictions on our behavior. We were told that these actions were taken to “flatten the curve,” to slow the spread of the coronavirus so as to prevent a spike in hospitalizations which may have overwhelmed our ability to help those who had serious reactions to the virus. That has been accomplished.

Why is it, then, that government officials express dismay when large numbers of new infections occur on a daily basis? The strategy was purported to slow the spread of infection, not to stop it. Logic dictates that the sooner that virus infects everyone who can fight it off, the safer will be those in nursing homes who may not have that ability. And the sooner that it passes through our population without overwhelming our medical facilities, the better for all the businesses that have been shut down.

Slowing the virus infection rate too much may result in having half of our businesses bankrupt when the virus has completed its spread.
