When I read the editorial “The educational insanity of March Madness” (March 19, TribLIVE), the first thing that came to mind was Debbie Downer from “Saturday Night Live.” The editorial misses the entire point of collegiate sports: They are for fun and entertainment. People study a lot, work hard and deal with the grind of daily life all year. Watching sports on TV or attending in person is a way to put life on the back burner for a few hours or days.
What a population tired from covid, inflation, uncivil political discourse, bank failures and war in Ukraine needs is a momentary respite, not a lecture from Debbie Downer.
