Letter to the editor: Litter plays part in flooding

With the recent heavy rains, we have been deluged (no pun intended) with many reports of road closures due to flooding even if no nearby waterway.

A PennDOT spokesperson stated that one of these floods was due to the Jersey barrier acting as a dam. He also said storm drains were blocked, which is a huge issue — PennDOT and the local governments cannot keep all the drains clear.

Driving around, one sees where the water collects; the drains are higher than the road or blocked with leaves, twigs and trash. Nothing can be done about the leaves, but the public can surely do something about the trash: Take it home, not just roll down the window and toss out your fast-food bag, water bottle, can or whatever.

With all the discussion about cleaning up the environment, not being litterbugs would be a great start. Not only would it look better, it would also be safer.
