Letter to the editor: Look to past to see that God isn't the problem
Regarding the letter “God is a problem, not an answer” (July 29, TribLIVE): I think we can agree on the presence of good and evil in the world. Most of us find it relatively easy to be “good” and kind but find it more challenging to resist engaging in unkind behaviors when we are tired, angry, hungry or believe we are being treated unjustly. These behaviors are called “sins.” The harm they cause both us and others requires help from above. God is very willing to be an active presence in our lives, if we ask him to be. Most recovering alcoholics will testify that this is so.
I regret that the letter- writer sees God as a punishing figure. God placed us here on earth, knowing that we would fall (or sin). It is wonderful that he sacrificed his only son to take upon himself the consequences for our sins if we will repent. It is wonderful that his son taught us how to live in love and harmony with one another before he gave up his life for us.
I grew up in an era when our country was one nation under God. Every morning in public school we read a passage from the Bible and said the Lord’s Prayer. Mostly we didn’t lock our doors or cars. Kids were safe to walk all over town by themselves. School was safe. Discipline was a pleasant tradition. Most people went to church. Divorce was rare. There were few homeless people.
You can’t convince me God is the problem. I know better.
