We entrust law enforcement to protect our communities, and that includes the voiceless members — our animals. Yet, all too often, animal cruelty and neglect cases are dismissed as minor inconveniences, leaving victims suffering and perpetrators unpunished.

Taking animal cruelty seriously isn’t just about protecting animals; it’s about fostering safer communities for all. Law enforcement plays a crucial role in deterring animal cruelty. Thorough investigations, specialized training for officers in handling animal abuse cases and collaboration with animal control and shelters are essential. Officers equipped with these resources can gather evidence, identify perpetrators and ensure animals receive necessary medical care.

Our city is lucky to have Officer Christine Luffey of the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police (PBP), who has been an animal advocate in our community for over 30 years. Recently, Luffey had been the target of a hostile work environment, resulting in her filing a report with human resources against her supervisors. The complaint has since been substantiated, underscoring the importance of greater officer involvement in animal cases.

Supporting community-oriented officers should be of the utmost importance to the PBP. We are thrilled to have her involvement, as she is a pillar of the community. Since 1997, Luffey has sponsored fundraisers through the PBP, like Biscuit Bingo, which raises money for local animal shelters and advocacy groups.
