I need to speak out concerning our president’s desire to reopen public schools before this school year ends (“Trump urges states to consider opening schools before summer,” April 28, TribLIVE).

Some people say we need to open schools so that parents can go back to work. But schools are not babysitters. Some say we need to open schools so that youngsters can be fed. But schools are not soup kitchens.

Here’s the reason we need to open schools: to educate our young Americans to become learned adults able to solve all the problems this crisis has created.

There are many retired folks who could volunteer for babysitting, bringing their years of experience to enhance the upbringing of our youth. There are many people taking on the needs of food for low-income families as their mission in this new type of war.

Cheer our teachers on as they concentrate on developing the best lesson plans ever, as we are confident they will. We are all in this together.
