Letter to the editor: Many hunters like Saturday opener

Tribune-Review

I am appalled that your paper would post the article “Opponents of Saturday deer opener cite negative economic, social impacts” (March 20, TribLIVE) without having opinions from both sides.

Myself and a bunch of other hunters are all for the Saturday opener and want it to continue. Not only do we not have to request a day off from work for Monday, which a lot of us cannot do because of our positions, but a lot of us cannot afford to miss a day’s pay, especially now with this current economy. Some people use vacation days, but if people only get one week’s vacation, I’m sure they do not want to burn one day for hunting. Also, a lot of hunters have children who would have to miss a day of school for hunting because many schools don’t recognize that day as anything important.

I don’t believe this change is hurting any hunter who is against it; they can still go to their camps on Friday and do not have to hunt until Monday if they choose to do so. I don’t think this is affecting businesses either, because guys going to hunt Saturday will most likely be stopping somewhere to get breakfast or lunch during the day and more than likely dinner afterward hunting.

This should not have been turned into a political issue. Legislators need to let the Pennsylvania Game Commission handle it on their own.
