We, the people of Westmoreland, have the absolute right to access our county commissioners when they hold public meetings at the courthouse, without fear of contracting covid-19. As an individual with multiple sclerosis, I am desperately trying to avoid putting myself at risk.
Transparency and accountability at these meetings are vital given decisions are being made on how our county’s $105 million American Rescue Plan funds will be used. The commissioners are required by the Treasury Department to factor in what we think we need.
But, more than two years into this pandemic, we have no ability for virtual access to commissioners’ public meetings. The meetings are held at 10 a.m. at the courthouse. Working people, those with transportation issues and those like myself with health concerns, including the elderly and homebound, are being left out of the decision-making process.
Our county has spent more than several million dollars to upgrade computer systems. The commissioners regularly participate in virtual meetings — but not with county residents during public meetings. The meeting room has inadequate ventilation and doesn’t allow for proper social distancing. Masks are not even required to enter the building.
I should not feel the constant need to justify why I continue to live in such an under-served county where my voice is rarely heard.
Commissioners, it is time to do the right thing by the residents of this county. In 2023, when you need us to retain your positions, my guess is you will hope we hear your voice. Now please hear ours!
