Many have wondered about the future of the Republican Party should Donald Trump lose a second consecutive presidential election. Some believe his populist and anti-institutional views will continue to dominate the party, while others think there could be a return to the politics of Mitt Romney and other moderates.
In my view, Speaker Mike Johnson might offer a glimpse into a post-Trump GOP. Johnson came to power when far-right legislators threw Kevin McCarthy overboard, calling for a stronger commitment to right-wing views. However, Johnson has proven to be willing to compromise with Democrats on crucial spending bills to avoid a government shutdown, something that directly contradicts the wishes of those who vouched for him in the first place.
True, Johnson has taken a firm stance against some bipartisan efforts (namely, border reform and Ukraine funding), and his rhetoric is often that of a typical MAGA enthusiast. Still, in critical moments, Johnson has demonstrated an inclination to “get things done.”
If Trump is defeated in November, it is unlikely his influence will entirely fade from the GOP. But Johnson’s tenure might be a sign some “return to normalcy” is possible in Washington policy-making.
