Letter to the editor: Misconceptions of God

Tribune-Review

The letter “God is a problem, not an answer” (July 29, TribLIVE) offered a fascinating insight into questions that have disturbed the thoughts of many people for a long time. Is it possible the writer’s conclusions were drawn based on worldly misconceptions?

The impression that God sanctions evil, sin and calamities because he knew what was going to happen and did not stop it is contrary to examples of God not knowing what an outcome will be until the action was completed. Two examples. Jonah 3:10, “And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them,” and Exodus 32:14, “And the Lord repented of the evil He thought to do unto His people.”

Jesus Christ repeatedly admonished people to repent and overcome.

The writer claims that God “is an angry being with a childlike mentality.” I, as a parent and grandparent, can say, when dealing with children one has to speak on the child’s level for the message to be understood.

The writer claimed that “repentance is absurd.” Has the writer ever told a person he was sorry for doing something to them?

The writer claimed that if you question the existence of God, you are damned for all eternity. This is false.

The Christian faith is Holy Spirit- based, not temporal. The writer says he does not believe in God, which is his choice. God has given humans free will; how we use it is entirely up to us.
