Letter to the editor: Money for education not making kids smarter

We have a governor who I believe feels by throwing money at teaching our children, they will become smarter. Or is it because teachers unions give millions of dollars to his party?

We spend more per student than any other country in the world. But our students keep falling further down the list on test scores and graduation. A smart man once said, “You can’t fix problems by throwing money at them.” We give millions of dollars to state colleges, yet tuition and housing costs keep going up. Some state colleges have billions of dollars in offshore accounts. Why? No help for students there.

I worked in a steel mill, and many of the men I worked with had gone to college. I never hear of the percentage of college students who gained employment in the field they went to college for. Thousands of dollars wasted for many of them.

Homeless veterans, women and children seem to be forgotten. Not enough police to protect us. But he brags that he has $2 billion lying in his state safe.

How can someone like this be trusted to hold office? I think he fights more to legalize drugs than to take care of what’s important. I guess it’s politics as usual. Just vote your party, good or bad.

I’m proud to be an independent, and I wish everyone was. Of course, we don’t have much to pick from no matter what party.
