Letter to the editor: More important issues than Trump airport

Tribune-Review

Recently, Rep. Guy Reschenthaler proposed renaming Dulles Airport in Washington, D.C., the Donald J. Trump Airport. Usually things are named for someone after a consensus has been reached concerning whether his legacy to a community or the nation has been generally good.

Trump, being in court and facing 88 felony charges, is still in the process of working on his legacy to the nation.

To propose renaming an airport after Trump in the same week that he is required to face criminal charges in court strikes me as fawning sycophancy. Isn’t there some other more important piece of legislation that takes precedence over renaming airports? Border security would be a good one; however, Republicans shot down a bipartisan bill at the behest of Trump.

Congress has been sitting on aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan for months. This aid is primarily to fight communism and terrorism across the globe … without involving our troops. I’d regard that as more important than airport-naming.

Trump served as president for four years and was never able to pass an infrastructure bill. President Biden passed one within three months of election. Maybe if the bill was named after Trump, it might’ve passed.

Frankly, I think if you want to name something after Trump, you should start small, such as a municipal sewage plant, and see how that goes.

Watching the antics of the current Congress brings to mind what the late author P.J. O’Rourke said: “Republicans are the party that complains about how government doesn’t work, then they get elected and prove it.”
