Letter to the editor: More on capitalism
In response to letter-writer Gabrielle Kitchen’s comments (“Capitalism is a sin,” Jan. 4, TribLIVE) on my letter about capitalism and the Ten Commandments (“Socialism & religious values,” Nov. 9, TribLIVE): She believes “capitalism can be truly evil,” implying that capitalists worship money over God. Capitalism is merely the acquisition of wealth by entrepreneurs who provide consumers with goods and services which are purchased through the free will of the consumer. The Ten Commandments merely provides moral guidance to not acquire wealth by lying, cheating, stealing, coveting or murdering.
Furthermore, nowhere in the Constitution can be found the phrase “separation of church and state.” The third article in the Bill of Rights states “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion OR prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” Posting the Ten Commandments in a public building does not cause disrespect to nonbelievers — nor does it establish a religion. It does reinforce the founding principles that formed the basis of our laws and government and is displayed prominently in the Capitol and the Supreme Court.
