Regarding Dave Majernik’s letter “Extremists on the Democratic side” (Jan. 4, TribLIVE): Since 1933, nearly all progressive social policies from which we benefit, or will benefit, have come from Democratic presidents and congressional leaders. Consider Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act.

I suggest reactionary Republicans, who object to the social programs passed by Democratic leaders, refuse to accept the payments and benefits from these programs. Otherwise, their hypocritical words will continue to fall on deaf ears.

Instead of railing against “Democrat extremists,” perhaps Republicans should consider proposing their own solutions to the day’s social issues. But then, that would require they actually do something positive, which they seem incapable of.
