Letter to the editor: Nicholson Township injection well opposed
Residents of Nicholson Township in Fayette County are fighting a proposed Class II D injection well site from a company called G2 Stem out of Virginia. A permit was submitted to the Environmental Protection Agency, and only residents within a half-mile radius from the site were notified.
The permit was submitted with incorrect documentation of surrounding water wells and abandoned gas wells. The wastewater well will be in operation for 10 years, pouring 388,080,000 gallons of toxic brine under our farmlands. Natural radioactive materials that are disturbed during the fracking process that come up with the produced water (brine) will eventually make their way to the surface and infect tributaries that lead to the Mon River.
Our residents opposed the well at a virtual hearing with the EPA on July 11. We gained support from our county commissioners and state representatives who attended the meeting and spoke in opposition to any injection wells in Fayette County. According to the Department of Environmental Protection, Nicholson Township is located in an environmental justice area.
Please email the EPA and voice your opposition to the UIC Class II D injection well in Nicholson Township to Kevin Rowsey at R3_UIC_Mailbox@epa.gov.
