Letter to the editor: No civility as long as Trump is in politics

Tribune-Review

With regard to your editorial “Can civility return to politics?” (April 28, TribLive): I really wish it could. Instead of attacking the character of their opponents, political candidates and parties should focus on solutions for our problems, how much those solutions will cost, how we will pay for them and how they will affect all of us, not just the 1%. Attack the ideas of the opponent, not the person.

But in this era of Donald Trump and Trumpism, that is no longer possible. Until the Republican Party denounces Trump, calls for his prosecution to the fullest extent of the law and renounces Trumpism, there is no possibility of civility or debate with a candidate and party that don’t believe in compromise, governing or trying to help the American people.

All they seem to do is attack President Biden and the Democrats, no matter what they propose. Any new idea is automatically blocked and opposed by them, especially if Trump says so, like the deal on funding and policy changes for the crisis at our border. Until the broken Republican Party is fixed, they are really the “Banana Republic”-an Party.

We need a functioning two-party system of checks and balances, not the gridlocked, dysfunctional, clown show chaos that we see in Congress. Those who support, reject the 2020 Electoral College vote and aqcuitted Trump in his two impeachment trials have violated their oaths of office. They are unfit to be in Congress.

Trump should be in prison now for his crimes. He is unfit, unqualified and disqualified by his crimes and actions.
