The current price of gasoline is a matter of concern to all drivers. Those who drive large SUVs or pickup trucks are particularly concerned. The average new pickup truck in 2021 was rated at 26 mpg, while the average sedan was rated at 34 mpg. Older models get much worse fuel efficiency.

Painters, carpenters and other tradespeople certainly need trucks to haul their tools and supplies. Hardly anyone else does. But the parking lots of stores and malls are almost filled with these big gas guzzlers. The common sight of a person getting into a 2- to 3-ton vehicle designed to haul heavy cargo while carrying nothing more than a bag of groceries is confounding.
