Letter to the editor: Our rights are being eroded

The first 10 amendments to the Constitution are defined as our “Bill of Rights.” They are defined as “inalienable rights.” All citizens need to read these. I am concerned with an erosion of these rights at the hands of our ruling elite. I don’t view this as a political party-specific issue but as a general issue with all of our “ruling elite.”

Take the First Amendment. When did Webster’s dictionary change the definition of “free” as in speech? How many people have lost their jobs as a result of expressing opinions or statements that went against politically acceptable current beliefs? Nowhere does it say tactful, polite or culturally acceptable speech. All it says is “free.”

When did we go from freedom of religion to freedom from religion? The result is a lack of morality and value for human life, and increased senseless violence and shootings. The moral base of our next generations have been eliminated.

The resultant arguments will be that the Constitution is a “living document” and needs alteration with current times. To me, this is bunk, because the statements in the original documents dealt with human rights. Our “ruling elite” have taken it upon themselves to alter our “inalienable rights.”

Read up on your rights and draw your own conclusions. As an emigree to this country (from Southeast Asia 30 years ago) who became a citizen and responsible member of society said to me, “What is wrong with you people? You are giving up all the reasons for leaving my home and coming to this country.” Think about it!
