I feel compelled to respond to the article “Community Options plan for 2nd group home in Unity draws concern from residents” (Jan. 15, TribLIVE). My reactions ranged from outrage to disappointment to sadness and finally returned to outrage.
It is inconceivable to me that any law-abiding, contributing member of society would have to fight for a right to simply have a home. I wonder if Ryan Cribbs, Renee Wilson or other “concerned” residents had to jump through such hoops when they were seeking a place to live.
You should all be ashamed of yourselves. The excuses you offered are laughable. To feign concern that the home is not accessible in terms of being on a hill and not being close to the proposed resident’s workplace? And traffic coming in and out at all hours of the day and night? Seriously? We’re talking two residents here, folks! Two young men wanting the same “privileges” that you all seem to take for granted.
I should think that you would be more concerned about your lack of compassion and humanity and the example you are setting for your children.
The only way we can move past our ignorance is through inclusion. Instead of people with disabilities constantly having to fit into our world, we all should try to fit in together. This should not even be a discussion. You have no idea how much richer your lives will be from having known someone who works twice as hard to have half as much as you. And for that, I am deeply saddened for you.
