My friends and I, the way-over-80 crowd and some of us with preexisting conditions, sit at our computers for hours on end hoping to be lucky enough to score a precious appointment to enable us to be vaccinated against the coronavirus. The times we’re not trying to get an elusive appointment, we are in contact with friends and families looking for some new way to secure an appointment.

Meanwhile, in conversations with friends and family in other states, I have learned that friends in Virginia have been vaccinated; they’re part of the over-80 crowd. Family members in South Carolina and Texas had both doses of the vaccine by the end of January; they’re 76 years old. My cousin in Texas said she was called by her family doctor saying he had the vaccine and “are you interested in being vaccinated?”; she and her husband had their second dose at the end of January.

My family doctor does not have the vaccine, and the best advice is “unfortunately at this time you’ll have to keep checking yourself.” Is this the best we can do?
