As the budget battle unfolds in Harrisburg, one thing is clear: Working people are being told, once again, there’s just not enough to go around for you. Not enough for schools. Not enough for housing. Not enough for health care. But somehow, there’s enough for a tax break for billionaires.

Every year, billionaires like Jeff Yass rake in hundreds of millions more from stock dividends, real estate portfolios and inherited wealth, while the rest of us get left out and left behind.

In Pennsylvania, our tax system is upside down, with workers paying more and the wealthy paying less. We shouldn’t have to fight for crumbs while the richest people in our state hoard more and more wealth.

An excess wealth tax would fix this imbalance, lowering taxes for working families while finally requiring the rich to pay what they owe, and raising $6.2 billion for the state. If Harrisburg lawmakers are serious about funding our future, they need to stop subsidizing wealth and start raising the revenue needed to build a state that works for all of us.
