When I was young, my grandmother lived directly across the street from me. I remember her warning us, “We have to be careful because of your grandfather’s job.” My grandfather was a judge, as was my uncle. My sisters and I would laugh off those comments and say, “Grandma, I don’t think we have anything to worry about.” I think about her warning all the time now. On Feb. 6, 2014, my mom was shot and killed by a man who hated judges after opening the front door of our home.

Twelve years ago, violence like this was not common. Now, gun violence is plaguing our communities, and political violence is rising at a staggering rate. Here in Pennsylvania, the governor’s residence was attacked while Gov. Josh Shapiro’s family was inside. In Minneapolis, two law-abiding citizens exercising their right to protest were killed in the street by federal agents. Look at the horrific events that took place on Jan. 6 by armed insurrectionists.

Armed extremism poses a threat to our democracy. Pennsylvania must pass stronger gun laws — our lives depend on it. Text “READY” to 644-33 to be a part of the solution.
