Letter to the editor: Pa. shouldn't go fishing during pandemic
On the same day Pennsylvania recorded its highest one-day total of coronavirus cases, Gov. Tom Wolf hung out a “go fishing” sign — the same governor who was late issuing a statewide stay-at-home, the same governor who continues to allow on-site purchasing of lottery tickets. Now Wolf invites everyone to leave home to go fishing.
Excuse me, Mr. Governor, but your social distancing guidelines for fishing won’t matter. Everyone will break the spirit, the intent and the effectiveness of the stay-at-home mandate on their way to the streams. People traveling from the highly infected cities, towns and counties, across highways, into sporting goods stores, grocery stores and public places to go fishing? Nothing bad can happen in that scenario.
I realize the state needs revenue; we all do. I am a private contractor and have obeyed the pleas to stay at home for over three weeks. This latest action by Wolf is a slap in the face to all who took this seriously. The governor appears to care more about revenue than stopping the spread of this pandemic.
Instead of Pennsylvania living up to its motto of the Keystone State to be the strong central arch supporting the greater good, Wolf has made Pennsylvania appear to be the weakest link in the chain trying to stop the spread of this pandemic.
